about

As a child growing up in the South Wales Valleys, Karen Ann was fascinated by stories of Welsh emigrations to Latin America and pictures of gauchos—South American cowboys—in her fourth grade geography textbook. After more than a decade living in Argentina, Costa Rica and finally Uruguay, she joined forces with Jorge Galemire, a composer, considered one of the best rhythm guitarrists in Uruguay. Though famous for his role as one of the originators of local musical style known as candombe beat, Galemire considered celtic music one of his most important influences since his teenage years.

Trelew blends traditional music from the British Isles with original compositions by Karen Ann and Galemire that explore the links between the “old country” and South America. They performed between 2005 and 2009 as a duo and also with other well-known musicians from Uruguay.

Their eponymous debut album 'Trelew' was nominated for a Graffiti, the Uruguayan equivalent of the Grammys. Critics hailed it as an album in English and celtic languages but clearly written and arranged “in the South”. The instruments used, including the bandoneon, an instrument intimately associated with tango, and tribal drums make it clear Trelew is part of a South American heritage.

Trelew is a town in the Patagonian region of Argentina founded by Welsh immigrants in the 1880s. They speak Welsh there to this day.
